Gold-Brown Paracord Artwork

After the first paracord artwork, the request for another combination arrived. The color combination gold-brown is a little bit oriented on Janoschs Tigerente because this set is for a little child. Have a look and leave a comment if you like.

Purple-Foliage Paracord Artwork

In the last days I did some paracord artwork for a friend. Herefor I created the color combination purple-foliage. It fits perfectly with the purple back of the nokia phone. I’ve added a Fenix E01 in purple to the keyring. At all nothing special, but it looks nice!

Hazard 4 in Deutschland eingetroffen!

Paperless Geocaching mit iPod Touch

Seit einigen Wochen nutze ich einen iPod Touch auf meinen Geocachingtouren um mir das Ausdrucken der Listings zu ersparen. Anfängliche Zweifel ob das echte Stück Papier so einfach zu ersetzen ist sind gänzlich verflogen und daher hier ein kleiner Erfahrungsbericht.

Zum Einsatz kommt ein iPod Touch, geschützt von einem Otterbox Case, und die Software iGeocacher. Die Tourvorbereitung startet damit das ich mir ein Pocket Query vom Zielgebiet besorge. Dies geht nur als Premium Member bei geocaching.com . Und jetzt treten die ersten Schwierigkeiten auf warum mir iPhone und co eigentlich überhaupt nicht gefallen. Die GPX muss irgendwie auf den iPod aber Apple weiß das zu verhindern und lässt nicht zu das man einfach so Dateien auf dem iPod ablegt. Aber die Software iGeocacher bietet dafür verschiedene Lösungen an. Zum einen kann man beim Hersteller der Software einen Account nutzen um online auf die Pocket Querys zu zugreifen oder aber man benutzt einen eigenen Server auf den man Zugriff hat. Weiteres zur ersten Lösung findet ihr auf der Herstellerseite, hier gehts weiter mit der zweiten.

In der Software kann man den eigenen Server eintragen und 5 verschiedene Gruppen (Pocket Querys) verwalten. Nachdem also die GPX Datein per FTP auf dem Server abgelegt wurde, importiert man sie via WLAN Verbindung des iPod Touch. Die Aufbereitung von 500 Caches geht ruckzug. Von hier an ist keine Internetzugang mehr nötig wenn man sich auf das reine Paperless Caching beschränken will. Die Software bietet aber auch weitere ‘Onlinefunktionen’ wie z.B. Logs eintragen, Caches auf Google Maps eintragen etc.

Nun wirds konkret: Unter dem Button “Caches” findet man eine Liste der Caches. Es stehen verschiedene Such- und Filteroptionen zur Verfügung um die Auswahl einzugrenzen. Wählt man nun den gewünschten Cache aus öffnet sich die Detailansicht die alle nötigen Informationen enthält. Hier findet man die Koordinaten, Behältergröße, Schwierig- und Terrainwertung, Beschreibung und vor allem den Hint den man auf “Knopfdruck” entschlüsseln kann sowei die letzten 5 Logeinträge. Also alles was man braucht.

Unter dem Button Edit kann man Notizen hinzufügen, eine Timestamp hinterlassen und den Status eintragen (Find, DNF) oder den Cache aus der Liste löschen.

Da der iPod Touch über kein integriertes GPS verfügt kann man ohne weiteres auch nicht die damit verbundenen Funtionen der iGeocacher Software nutzen. Auch der Verwendung einer Bluetooth GPS Maus hat Apple einen Riegel vorgeschoben. Der integrierte Bluetooth Stack enthält das nötige Protokoll nicht.

Doch man kann sich Abhilfe schaffen. Ist der iPod ‘ge-jailbreaked’ kann man den nötigen Stack nachinstallieren und dann eine Bluetooth GPS Maus verwenden. Steht iGeocacher dann ein GPS Signal zur Verfügung kann man auch ganz auf den normalen GPS Empfänger verzichten und nur den iPod verwenden. Ich persönlich bin kein Fan davon, denn ich liebe den integrierten Kompass in meinem Garmin 60csx. Einen Vorteil hat es dennoch: Man kann sich die Cacheliste nach der eigenen Position sortieren lassen. Hat man dann den Cache erreicht steht dieser dann ganz oben in der Liste. Steht WLAN zur Verfügung kann man sich die Caches auch auf Google Maps Karten anzeigen lassen.

Unterwegs ist der iPod Touch mit Otterbox Case in einem Maxpedition PDA Holster sicher verstaut das entweder am Rucksack, am Gürtel oder anderswo befestigt ist.

Fazit: Mit dem iPod Touch und der Software iGeocacher, die übrigens um die 10€ kostet, ist Paperless Caching komfortabel möglich. Umfangreichere Multicaches werde ich mir aber auch in Zukunft ausdrucken.

Maxpedition FR-1 – A real multipurpose bag

A few days ago the Maxpedition FR-1 and some pouches arrived. Original designed as a medic bag the FR-1 is made in a “split-design”. You can open it very wide. The opening angle can be adjusted with a paracord and a cordlock. On the back der are MOLLE / PALS webbing to attach the FR-1 on compatible gear with long Malice Clips or similar stuff like the 5″ Tac Ties from Maxp. On the left and right side ist webbing, too. 2 rows 1 slot. On the front as well. 2 rows 2 slots and a loop area, 9,5cm x 5cm. Behind this loop area is the often used …hmm…don’t know how to call it…and don’t know for what….”sleeve pocket”.

Overall measurements: 17,8 x 12,7 x 7,6 cm

On the top is a grab handle covered with non-slip material and two d-rings to attach a sling as seen on the pictures.

Inside Back

Here is a mesh pocket, 13cm wide and 15cm deep. Above the mesh pocket are loops of elastic band. In the first row double layerd 1″ with 7cm slots. In the second 2″ in the back and 1″ in the front with three 5cm slots. At the top is a paracord loop to attach different things.

Inside Front

On this side is a Zipperpocket, same size as the mesh pocket on the other side (13cm wide, 15cm deep). Above this pocket are elastics again but not horizontally, but vertically. 5cm wide, double layerd with 7,5 cm slots. In my opinion is the elastic band not flexible enough.

The FR-1 as a medic pouch

The first run of pictures you see is the FR-1 as a medic pouch. I’ve replaced the foliage paracord zipper pulls with emergency-orange ones. (Got it from here ). On the front are two medic patches from here and the Surgical Glove Pouch from Maxp.

On the back is a Gerber Cutter attached. Furthermore there are pictures from the medic stuff stowed inside. But I don’t want to write more about the content. Some inspiration you can find in my article about my First Aid Kit in the Janus.

The FR-1 as an EDC bag

My second application for the FR-1 is to use it as an small EDC bag. In combination with a 1,5″ shoulder strap you have a comfortable, small and useful EDC bag.

Outside

The first setup is with the Clip On PDA Holster and the Compass / GPS / Strobe Pouch on the front. In the PDA holster is my iPod Touch stowed and in the strobe pouch a bandage.

Inside

Here is my wallet, my keys (attached to the paracord loop), knife, fenix light, RiteInTheRain 4×6 cover and some more stuff.

Here are two other setups. One with a Three-by-Five pocket and one with the Volta Battery Case for my Blackberry 8900

Result

The FR-1 is a really great multipurpose bag. I have only one negative point. The elastic band is not flexible enough. Thats it.
